Livonia Churchill Football Player Profile: Shane Morelli

Shane Morelli is ready for a big season with Livonia Churchill football this year and is excited after a terrific year last year. “I’m excited about this season,” Morelli said.  “Coming off a good season last year, I plan to do even better in my final year of high school,” he continued.

Morelli learned a lot last year as one of the few juniors that started on the team and said that experience brings him more confidence heading into this year. “In my junior season, we went 7-3, and I was one of the few juniors that started on our filled senior team. Despite our success in the regular season, we had an early exit in the playoffs last year, and I hope to play more than ten games during my senior year,” Morelli said.

Morelli is a wide receiver for the Chargers and always likes making the big plays on the field. “I love the position,” Morelli said.  “I love the feeling of beating the corner or safety for a big play. The position takes a lot of work to be good at it and is a lot easier when you have a good quarterback throwing to you,” Morelli stated.

Morelli will be having a new face throwing to him this year as Gavin Brooks will be starting for the Chargers this year. He replaces last year’s quarterback. Morelli has worked with Brooks since February, and the two are very excited to be working together this year.  “Gavin’s Great,” Morelli said. “We’ve been playing 7vs7 together since February and we haven’t stopped working since. We both know what it’s going to take to succeed this year and I think that helps a lot,” Morelli commented.

Morelli has made improvements with his game as well, and he has focused on some key things to prepare for this season. “I’ve worked on my route running and release a lot this year.  I’ve worked on becoming more than just the serious threat in our offense,” he said.

Morelli started playing football when he was just ten years old and has loved the game ever since. “My Dad got me playing football when I was ten years old, and I stuck with it. Before high school, I was never really a starter.  Sometimes I ‘didn’t like it, but once I got to high school, things changed. I’ve been a starter every game since I got to high school,” Morelli added.

Football has taught Morelli a lot, and they will be lessons he will have for the rest of his life. “It taught me a lot about working together.  In some sports, you can have one great player and succeed. In football, all 11 on the field need to do their part to be successful. It has also taught me perseverance.  When you’re down in a game you ‘can’t give up regardless of the situation,” Morelli said.

Morelli is a senior this year at Livonia Churchill and will miss playing high school football after this year. “‘I’ll miss the coaches and the environment of Friday nights.  The coaches on the staff at Churchill are a group of guys that will do everything they can to put us in a position to succeed; they hold us accountable. There’s nothing like Friday nights, all your friends, and fellow classmates coming to support you.  The band adds a lot to the experience,” Morelli added.
