Hockey: Michigan Defeats Michigan State 5-3

What do you get for the guy who has everything like Coach Mel Pearson? I know, a victory over rival Michigan State Spartans would be a gift that keeps giving. The Michigan Men’s hockey team presented coach Pearson a 5-3 victory Friday night at the Red Berenson Rink Yost Ice Arena. With both teams needing points for the tournament and hosting the Spartans the Wolverines opened the scoring early with a goal from sophomore forward Jack Becker at the 3:32 mark of the first period for the 1-0 lead of a two-goal game.

The Spartans with a penalty expiring tied the game 1-1 with a goal from Sam Saliba who beat Hayden Lavigne to close the first period 1-1.  The Wolverines opened the game up in the second period on Michel Pastujov’s first goal at the 2.52 mark of the second period to give Michigan a 2-1 lead followed up by forward Jack Becker’s second goal of the night past Drew De Ridder to give Michigan a 3-1 lead midway in the second period.

Will Lockwood started a new scoring streak with a second-period goal to give the Wolverines a commanding 4-1 lead going into the third period. The Spartans came alive in the third period when Austin Kamer pushed the puck past Lavigne to make it a 4-2 game however Michael Pastujov for the Wolverines produced his second goal of the night to give Michigan the 5-2 lead in the 3rd.

Wojciech Stachowiak was able to bring the Spartans within two goals with a rebound past Hayden Lavigne to get to the 5-3 score however the Spartans could not produce any other scores for the night and put pressure on the Michigan goalie even outshooting the Wolverines 11-7 in the third period. With the  Spartans outshooting the Wolverines in the third period they were outshot by Michigan 36-23 for the game and the Wolverines average 37 shots per game so they are on track.  The win moves Michigan into a second-place tie with Minnesota who was beaten by Penn State last night.

Tonight’s game will be played in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena on National Pizza Day at 7:00 on Fox Sports Detroit.
