Women’s Basketball: Michigan Beats Oakland 78-69

It was a great battle between two teams from Michigan but in the end it was the team from Ann Arbor that pulled off the win as Michigan came out on top 78-69.

Oakland played very well and led in multiple points of the game but in the end it was Michigan that pulled away late. Despite the loss, Oakland Head Women’s Basketball Coach Jeff Tungate was impressed with his team’s effort. “I am really proud for how are team battled during the game. I thought they played hard and I am proud of how they battled during the stretch. I thought our defense was solid and we did a good job moving the basketball so I think there is a lot of positives to build off of against Michigan” Tungate said. One of the things Oakland did well was limiting and containing Michigan Point Guard Katelynn Flaherty. “We did a really good job of guarding her. She had 26 points on the night but we forced her to have 8 turnovers and you usually don’t see that out of her” Tungate said.. Many players for the Golden Grizzlies were in foul trouble and Tungate says it’s a work in progress. “We have to get rid of the fouls where we are reaching. I don’t mind the aggressiveness I don’t mind the block a shot and take a charge fouls but we have to eliminate the hand check fouls and for the most part we did not do those types of fouls for most of the game” Tungate Continued. Sha’Keya Graves led the way for the Golden Grizzlies with 19 points, 3 rebounds and was 7-14 from field goal range. Cierra Bond had 14 points, 7 rebounds and was 3 for 8 from 3 point range. Taylor Gleason had 12 points on the game and also had 4 rebounds in the game. Oakland was 9-24 from 3 point range and 24-69 from field goal range.

Michigan had a great performance from many players and Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico says the team had to battle with a very good Oakland team. “We did not get key stops when we needed to” Arico said. “They made plays and they did not go away and continued to make big shots and those are good tests for us at this point in the year and it’s good for the young players to have this experience because it’s only going to help us grow.”. Arico also commented on Oakland Guard Taylor Gleason who was at Illinois before transferring to Oakland. “Taylor was a high school player when I first came to Michigan. She had a tremendous high school career and is an incredibly hard worker. She had an outstanding night and was really tough to guard and was fired up for this matchup. She did a fantastic job tonight.” Arico said. Coach Arico also noted that it is very tough to play a team like Oakland. “We tried to contest them, we tried to locate them and they exposed us” Arico said. “You can’t take possessions off and they made us pay when we did. They did a good job of moving the ball, finding their shooters and creating shots but we got some great stops down the stretch when we needed to.  Michigan will be playing Detroit later in the year and Arico noted the importance of playing teams from the state of Michigan. “I think it is very important to establish those relationships most importantly in the state of Michigan. It’s important to keep those games going for the younger kids to watch other programs in the state play. Those programs do a tremendous job and we have some tremendous programs in the state of Michigan. It’s really critical for all of us coaches in the state of Michigan to support each other” Arico continued. Hallie Thome led the way for the wolverines with 29 points, 7 rebounds, was 10 for 14 from field goal range and was 9 for 12 from the free throw line. Katelynn Flaherty also had a good night for the wolverines. She had 26 points, 4 rebounds and was 7 for 10 from the free throw line. Michigan also had good performances from 2 freshman. Hailey Brown had 10 points and 11 rebounds on the game and also was 2 for 2 from the free throw line and 4 for 8 from field goal range. Southfield’s Deja Church also had a good night for the Wolverines. She had 11 points, 2 rebounds, and was 7-10 from the free throw line. Michigan was 25-54 from field goal range and was 25 for 34 from the free throw line.

The Next game for the Michigan Women’s Basketball team is this weekend when Michigan travels to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio to take on the Bobcats at 2 pm on Saturday November 25th.
