Michigan Beats Penn State 89-69 to go to 1-0 in Big Ten Play

It was the beginning of Big Ten Play and Michigan dominated most of the game as the Wolverines got their first Big Ten Win of the year as they beat Penn State 89-69 at Crisler Center on Thursday Night.

Penn State just could not get it going early against the  wolverines as the Nittany Lions struggled early, but head coach Coquese Washington said they did improve throughout the course of the game. “The first quarter is where the game got away from us and we never really recovered from that.” Washington Said

Teniya Page led Penn State in points and Washington says she is turning into one of the best players in the country. “I think she is one of the best players in the conference and in the country as well” Washington Said “We struggled to score on offense at points in the end and she was able to keep us in the game” Washington Continued

Page led the Nittany Lions with 19 points and was 4 for 5 from the free throw line. Amari Carter had 16 points and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Jaida Travascio-Green had 10 points and was also a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line.

Michigan came out strong and dominated the first quarter and there was no looking back from there and head coach Kim Barnes Arico was very pleased with her team’s performance against Penn State. “That was some of the best basketball that I have seen any of our teams play,” Arico Said “We made shots, shared the basketball and defended well and I was very proud of our team for doing that.” Arico Said

Katelynn Flaherty put on a Katelynn Flaherty type of performance as she nailed 10 three points shots a School record for Michigan. She was also 11 for 20 from field goal range and had a total of 33 points in the game. “She was incredible tonight” Arico Said “I was proud of the way her teammates were able to find her.” Arico Said

Flaherty may have stolen the show but Hallie Thome also had a very good performance as she had a double double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Nicole Munger had 15 points on the night and also had 6 rebounds. Jillian Dunston had 11 rebounds against the Nittany Lions.

Michigan’s next matchup will be on New Year’s Eve as they will take on Iowa in Iowa City.
