Michigan Hockey Player of the Week: Dexter Dancs

This week’s Michigan Player of the Week is Forward Dexter Dancs

When Michigan hockey put Dexter Dancs, Cooper Marody and Tony Calderone together, it was lightning in a bottle. The line has had a total of 4 goals and 5 assists in the weekend series vs Ferris State. The line has been named the Run DMC line, named after the popular rap group in the 1980’s. “I didn’t even know them at first,” said Dexter Dancs. “I know that’s what people have been calling us but we are having fun. Cooper and Tony are really good friends of mine and it’s good we had a good couple of games. We started off slow but we are starting to get hot and hopefully we can keep it up,” Dancs continued.

This week, Michigan welcomes Minnesota for a weekend series. This is the first time a conference opponent has visited Yost Ice Arena. Dancs says that he is ready for the challenge and they will have their work cut out for them against one of the best teams in the Big Ten and college hockey. “We have to play hard,” said Dancs. “We have to play strong defensively and we have to get pucks and bodies to the net. We also need to bring pressure to Eric Schierhorn (Minnesota goalie). He’s having a good year so far so we have to get bodies in front of Schierhorn so he can’t see the puck,” Dancs said. Another player to watch out for on the Gophers is freshman Casey Mittelstadt. So far this season, Middlestadt has had a total of 9 points this season (3 goals, 6 assists) for the Gophers.

Michigan has had a good season up to this point and Dancs thinks there is a lot they do well. However, there’s a lot to work on at this point. “We have good talent and there has been a ton of bright spots.  I really like what this group brings but there are a couple of things that we have to work on,” Dancs said. “We are a young team and were one of the youngest teams in college hockey. I have nothing bad to say about this team, and I think we can do a lot of big things this year,” Dancs continued. The Wolverines not only have one of the youngest teams, they also have the youngest player in college hockey in defenseman Quinn Hughes.  “Quinn is a special, special player and he might be the youngest player in college hockey but he is also the best skater,” Dancs remarked. “It’s a treat to watch him play, and he could be a very good player in the NHL someday,” Dancs said.

Michigan hosts Minnesota November 10th and 11th from Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor. Puck drop for both games is at 7:30 pm.
