Ferris State beats Michigan in Overtime

It was an interference call that rallied Ferris State with the win as the Bulldogs beat Michigan in overtime 3-2 as Michigan splits the series with Ferris State.

Ferris State played very well for most of the weekend and was in both games until the end. Head coach Bob Daniels was very pleased with the effort from his team tonight. “It was a bounce-back for us as a team,” said head coach Bob Daniels. “I said tonight we would be in it most of the game heading into the third period, and sure enough we were. We got the goal late in the game to tie it up and we felt confident going into overtime,” Daniels continued.  They played well all weekend and wanted to keep it close and they did just that as they got the goal from Ryker Killins to get the win for the Bulldogs. They are first against Michigan since 2006.  “Going into the third I thought what is the identity of our team going to be now?” Daniels said. “I think we responded well tonight and we definitely have confidence going into next week,” Daniels continued.

Michigan let a sweep get away from them but head coach Mel Pearson said he was impressed with his first line of Dexter Dancs, Cooper Marody and Tony Calderone which had a total of 4 goals and 5 assists in the two games against Ferris State. “They have been very good and they bring everything to the table,” said Pearson. “They have speed and skill and have chemistry. Right now they are hot and about as good as anyone. So good for them,” Pearson said. Dancs and Calderone also extended their point streaks in tonight’s game. Pearson also thought goaltender Hayden Lavigne played well tonight. “I thought he played great and was very solid,” Pearson said. “I can’t really fault him on goals against,” Pearson said. “They continue to give us good goaltending and if they keep doing that, we will have a chance to win every game and that’s all you can ask for,” Pearson continued.  This is the second time in two weeks that Michigan went to overtime and the second time that they have lost in overtime. But even with the interference call, he thinks his team played well tonight and can take something away from this series heading into Big Ten play. “Give Ferris State a lot of credit. They have great goaltending, they scored when they needed to, and we could not convert on our chances,” Pearson said. “When I look back on this there is a lot to like about this team, but you have to put teams away. We did that last night but could not do it tonight,” Pearson continued.

Michigan outshoots Ferris State 44-23 despite the loss. Michigan enters a tough stretch in Big Ten play starting next week against Minnesota. Puck drop will be at 7:30 for both games on November 10th and 11th.
