Hartland Girls Basketball’s Whitney Sollom Commits to Michigan

Whitney Sollom is getting ready for her senior year of girls basketball at Hartland High School.  On Sunday, she decided on where she was going to play her college basketball next year. Sollom announced she would be committing to Michigan next season to play for Kim Barnes Arico. Sollom chose Michigan because she felt it was the best fit for her. “I chose Michigan because I fell in love with the school and the coaches. It just felt right,” Sollom said.

The recruiting process started even before Sollom got to high school.  Sollom first met Kim Barnes Arico in 8th Grade. Sollom also had many other options, including Duke, Louisville, Michigan State, and UCLA.

Her Parents both played college athletics; her Father Brad was a quarterback for Michigan’s football team in the late ’80s.  Her Mom played women’s basketball at Michigan State in the early ’90s. Both of them wanted the best for Whitney, and both are very excited for her. “My parents never pressured me to go anywhere, and they are both happy for me for my decision to play at Michigan,” Sollom said.

Sollom wanted to announce her commitment before the season started so she could focus on her Senior year at Hartland High School. The team is expected to be a significant contender for a state title this year. “That was my plan,” Sollom said.  “I wanted to get it done before my senior year just so I can focus on winning a state championship, school, and basketball. It was a difficult decision because a lot of great schools recruited me, and I feel blessed by that, but Michigan was the best fit for me,” Sollom stated.

Quote from Hartland Girls Basketball Coach Don Palmer:
Whitney is one of those rare once in a lifetime type of player. She is tall, athletic, coachable, and has leadership qualities. In her three years of High School Basketball Whitney and her Teammates have won 64 games, 9 Championships, and have appeared in two quarterfinal games. The University of Michigan is getting a great player but, more importantly, they are getting a quality person.
