Brother Rice Athletics Player Profile:  DJ Dixon

Earlier This week, Great Lakes Post, spoke with Brother Rice hockey and lacrosse star, DJ Dixon to recap the hockey season and discuss his current lacrosse season.

Summarize you hockey season this year:

DJ:  This year’s season was everything I could hope for.  We had a great group of guys and it was a lot of fun representing the school.  Even though we came up short in the end, I still feel that we had a great year and have another reason to work hard in the offseason.

What’s it like being a forward?

DJ:  I have always enjoyed playing forward and being a threat to score goals.  Playing center, I get to be a key part of the defense as well. Being a two way forward is the main part of my game and I try to have an impact all over the ice.

What are your goals for next season on the Ice?

DJ:  The obvious main goal for next season is a State Championship.  I think that with our returning players and leadership, we have a high chance of putting on a show at USA Arena. Another goal would be to win the Catholic league.  We know that Catholic Central is a hard-fought rivalry game and we hope to come out on top of that matchup. For me, I plan to play my role on the team to the best of my ability and have a blast with my brothers for one more year.

How do you think lacrosse season is going for you?

DJ:  This lacrosse season is off to a great start.  Coming off a tough year, we had the goal of an undefeated season.  Through offseason training and focus we have managed to sustain that goal and make it into the top 25 national rankings.  We plan to carry on the momentum and finish this season as state champs and earn a top 10 national ranking.

What first got you into lacrosse?

DJ:  I started playing lacrosse when I was in the first grade.  Looking up to my older brother playing lacrosse, I wanted to be just like him.  Also, my dad was on the very first Brother Rice lacrosse team and was the first All American.  He taught me all about the game and continues to have an influence on my lacrosse skills.

Is this the year Rice gets back on top in Lacrosse?

DJ:  I believe we never left the top despite the state championship loss.  Our tradition remains strong and we take pride in the program’s past. This year, however, is a statement year to prove we are still a dominant program.  Thus far, I believe we have made that clear.

How do you mentally prepare for a game?

DJ:  I use visualization as a way to prepare for games.  I usually listen to music and close my eyes, thinking of what I need to do to help my team.  I try to get the proper rest and nutrition prior to any game as well.

What have your sports hockey, and lacrosse taught you?

DJ:  Playing both hockey and lacrosse has taught me so much.  I have formed many life long friendships with guys I have been playing hockey and lacrosse with since middle school.  Also, I have learned how to compete in these sports. Both are physically demanding, so I have learned how to take care of my body as well.  Even though balancing both sports can be difficult at times, I still am grateful for the relationships and memories I have made during both.

What are your goals for next year in both sports?

DJ:  Bringing home a state championship in both sports is the goal for next year.  As I have said before, Brother Rice athletics fosters a work ethic unlike any other.  Through hard work and dedication, I believe this goal is tangible in both sports. I look forward to my senior year and I can’t wait.
