Brighton Football Player Profile: Mason McGuire

The Brighton football team had an incredible run to the state finals this year but lost to Davison in the championship game at Ford Field on Saturday. One of the players that made an impact on this year’s team is Mason McGuire. “I think it went well this year. I had a good amount of catches but not close to what I wanted but I was okay with it,” McGuire said.

McGuire says this run to the state finals has been incredible and he was happy to be a part of it. “This playoff run has been crazy, honestly. I always thought we were good, but I didn’t know how far we could go as a team and it’s just been a dream come true.”

McGuire is a wide receiver for the Bulldogs and says the position is hard at times but very enjoyable. “Its very fun because you never know if you’re going to get the ball or not so you have to work harder to get open and be the best at your spot. If its a pass play and obviously everyone wants the ball, so if you are playing wide receiver, you have to work hard with footwork and your hands to get open to be able to get the ball and make plays,” McGuire said.

Football means a lot to McGuire and the sport will always mean a lot to him and his family. “It means a lot, my dad played high school and college football and he has high expectations for me and I just want to live up to those expectations. Also, I want to be better than him, so it’s a very competitive game for me.”

Mason tries to stay calm and relaxed when he plays. “I try to stay as relaxed as possible because I know that if I let the game get into my head I won’t play my best football game. I just feel if you let the crowd and all the cheering get to you, then you won’t play relaxed you will play tense and scared. If you stay relaxed, you will play better.”

Football has provided many life lessons for McGuire, “Football has taught me a lot of lessons on when we lose, you can’t quit, you have to keep going.”
