Brighton Boys Soccer Player Profile: Charlie Sharp

Recently, Great Lakes Post sat down with Brighton Soccer’s Charlie Sharp to recap the soccer season from this year.

How do you think your season went?

CS: The season was good as a team.  We didn’t want it to end the way it did, but we still achieved a lot of our goals as a team including a KLAA championship and a district title. For me personally, it went pretty well. I think Colin and I did a good job this season leading this team.

What was it like being named captain?

CS: Being named captain alongside Colin Adam was a great privilege. Brighton soccer has a history of being a top team in the state, so being chosen to be a leader of the group was a big honor.

How tough was the KLAA this season?

CS: The KLAA was a grind. Having to play 2 to 3 games a week against very challenging opponents takes a toll on your physical and mental health.  I think in general it was great competition to prepare us for playoffs.

What does Mark Howell mean to you?

CS: Mark is a great role model and just all around guy. He has a lot of passion for the game.  I know coach means a lot to the team because he pushes us every day to become better players and young adults. He is a great coach because he knows what it’s like to play high school soccer at Brighton. He knows that it’s a great program and it really shows with how much time and effort he puts into the team. Mark means more than words for our team.

What it’s like to commit to Western Michigan to continue your soccer career?

CS: It is a really awesome feeling. I’m so excited to get to play at such a great program. Just thankful to be able to play at such a great school.

How do you mentally prepare for a game?

CS: I usually talk to my teammates and just chill out before games. But sometimes before big games, I will listen to music and prepare myself to play.

What has soccer taught you?

CS: Soccer has taught me always to be a leader and to work hard. No matter how hard you’re working, someone is still working harder than you.

What will you miss about high school sports?

CS: I will miss playing for my school and community. But most of all, playing with my best friends in a game that we all love. I will miss just about everything about high school sports. The hype before a game, bus rides, big wins, team dinners, big goals, playing in front of your friends and the coaches are what I will miss. Coach Mark and Coach Ed will continue the success of Brighton soccer.
