BIG TEN SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: Purdue Upsets Rutgers 4-3

 

 

The Purdue Boilermakers upset the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 4-3 last night in the wee hours of Friday Morning in the fourth game of the Big Ten Softball Tournament.

 

After a 2 and a half hour rain delay, Purdue started off the game right away in the Top of the First Inning as Mallory Baker hits a single to right field scoring Rachel Becker to give Purdue an early 1-0 lead. They would get another run in that same inning when Lexi Huffman advanced to second on a wild pitch which scored Becca Jones to give Purdue a 2-0 lead.

 

Rutgers would get on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Nicole Bowman reached base on a Fielders Choice which scored Jess Hughes to put Rutgers on the Board. The Next Batter was Penelope Russ who hit a single to the Pitcher to tie the game at 2. Aleah Marra then hit a single to right-center to give Rutgers the 3-2 lead over Purdue at the end of the 3rd inning.

 

The Boilermakers would score in a big way in the Fifth inning when Mallory Baker hit a double to left field scoring 2 runs to give Purdue a 4-3 lead in the top of the 5th inning. Purdue would end up winning the game 4-3 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Softball Tournament.

 

Purdue’s Sydney Bates took the win for the Boilermakers. Her record improves 12-8 on the year. Kaitlynn Moody picked up her 4th save of the season for the Boilermakers. Corah Price takes the loss for the Scarlet Knights her record falls to 16-10 on the year. Rutgers will likely be heading to the NIT Softball Tournament next week

 

Purdue will take on Minnesota Today at 7 PM on BTN.
